American Military Operation on Caracas Fuels Anxieties of Future Greenland Acquisition.

Recent American bombardment in the South American nation and the capture of its leader have sparked worry regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the former president's political movement have reportedly focused on the strategically important island following the operations in South America.

Provocative Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely a short time after the start of the Venezuelan operation, a prominent right-wing commentator, who is married to a high-ranking White House adviser, shared a symbolic image. The picture showed Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, with the cryptic message: "COMING."

This blatant suggestion to annex the mineral-rich region, which is a part of the NATO alliance, provoked swift and strong condemnation from Denmark's representatives.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat additionally pointed out that the kingdom had substantially boosted its defence spending this year, allocating a substantial sum expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic defence. "Furthermore, we expect full recognition for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Political Moves and Strategic Interests

The situation were additionally complicated by the recent naming of a US state governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly thanked the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "privilege" to work in a unpaid role to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative commended the president's decisive move, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Since returning to office, the US president has repeatedly unnerved transatlantic partners with his stated interest in Greenland. The territory is considered critically important for national security and potential mineral exploitation. It currently houses the most northerly US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a significant television appearance, the president declined to rule out the use of armed action to gain control of Greenland. This stance comes during growing great-power rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of intent, Danish intelligence service took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland delivered a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex sentiment. While a vast majority of the island's inhabitants desire self-rule from Denmark, there is simultaneously scant appetite to become part of the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare independence for many years.

Analyst Assessment: A Credible Scenario?

Military analysts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a action. One thinktank analyst specializing in military analysis admitted she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a couple hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she observed.
